Crash on 91 Freeway in Artesia kills man and two children

A Long Beach man and two children were killed early Saturday morning in a multivehicle crash on the 91 Freeway in Artesia, authorities said.

The collision occurred just after 1 a.m. near Pioneer Boulevard when a westbound Jeep clipped the rear of a gas tanker truck, hit the concrete barrier and flipped over, said California Highway Patrol Officer Stephan Brandt.

Their vehicle was then struck by a car traveling in the westbound HOV lane. All three occupants of the Jeep were pronounced dead at the scene, including a 33-year-old man, a girl, 3, and a boy, 1.

“It’s a pretty terrible situation,†Brandt said.

A 6-year-old female passenger in the other vehicle sustained major injuries, while the driver had minor injuries, he said. Both were taken to Long Beach Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel extracted the three occupants from the Jeep, according to the CHP. All three had been wearing seat belts.
