Numerous 911 calls about the incident at the intersection of Columbus Avenue and Riverdale Drive started coming in shortly after 2 p.m., Sgt. Tom Lorenz said.

In preliminary interviews, witnesses said Hernandez was traveling on his bike at a high rate of speed.

He was riding his bike on the sidewalk on the south side of the street, which means when he entered the roadway, he was headed westbound in an eastbound lane.

Due to the extent of the boy’s injuries, paramedics did a “scoop-and-run†in which he was extricated from under the bus for immediate transport to Glendale Memorial Hospital, Lorenz told the Glendale News-Press.

Hernandez was pronounced dead at 3:04 p.m. at the hospital, Lorenz added. It was not clear which school Hernandez attended.

A preliminary investigation indicated Hernandez was riding his bike westbound on Riverdale, while the bus was heading northbound on Columbus.

When Hernandez entered the intersection, where there is a four-way stop, he was struck by the bus, Lorenz said.

The bus driver told police she never saw the boy coming, Lorenz added.

There is a circular median in the center of the intersection that vehicles must go around after stopping.

“You can’t speed through this intersection,†Lorenz said.
