4 lawmen hurt in shootout with parolee are recovering, officials say

Four lawmen hurt during a shootout with a parolee Friday near Sacramento are expected to recover.

Authorities identified the suspect as Sammy Duran. He was taken into custody, apparently uninjured, at 12:30 a.m., Fox 40 reported.

An agent for U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcment, or ICE, who was not identified, was shot about 3 p.m. while working with investigators from the Roseville Police Department to apprehend Duran, according to ICE.

Once officers made contact with Duran, 32, shots were fired. The ICE agent was shot in the leg, said Brian Jacobson, a spokesman for the city of Roseville.

Duran, armed with an “assault-type rifle,†fled and again shot at authorities, said Lt. Cal Walstadt of the Roseville Police Department.

One Roseville police officer was shot. Two other officers were injured by shrapnel.

Fox 40 reported that their conditions ranged from fair to serious but that none of the injuries was life threatening. The station said one or more of the officers were expected to be released soon.

Roseville is about 18 miles from Sacramento.
