“I just want their families to know,†he said. “Most of the people seem OK and we’re just letting the paramedics do their job.â€

It was unknown how many people were on board.

San Francisco Fire Department officials told KTVU-TV that injured passengers were taken to hospitals. They had no immediate word of fatalities but emphasized that rescue operations were still underway.

Photos showed that the tail of the plane broke off on landing.

Video showed black smoke coming from the aircraft and fire officials on the scene.
