Ohana Brewing finally gets a tasting room of its own -- in Alhambra
Ohana Brewing Co. has been making beer for nearly two years, but until this week there was no dedicated taproom space for Ohana’s fans to sample the beers. Though the downtown Los Angeles production brewery will remain closed to the public for the time being, a cozy tasting room is now open in Alhambra.
Just one door down from one of the L.A. area’s best craft beer destinations, 38 Degrees Ale House, Ohana’s new space was unveiled Monday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony presented by the Alhambra Chamber of Commerce. Although the tasting room is operating under a conditional-use permit that only allows customers to sample four (4-ounce) tasters, growler fills will also be available in addition to brewery merchandise.
The nearly 900-square-foot tasting room is open seven days a week: 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Sunday hours are 11 a.m. until 5 p.m.
There are six taps dedicated to Ohana’s rotating selection of beers, and the 4-ounce taster pours are $2 for Ohana’s core beers, $3 for “premium†(i.e. hoppy or higher-alcohol) brews and $4 for the sour beer offerings. Two-liter growler fills cost between $12 and $16 depending on the beer, and customers can purchase blank glass jugs on site for just $5, or bring in their own blank growlers. To prevent bottlenecks when the taps are busy, there are even four taps dedicated to growler fills that should help keep the lines moving.
Brewery owner Andrew Luthi said he hopes that the restrictions on the tasting room’s licenses can be relaxed after a few months of smooth operating, but that until then craft fans can always stop at 38 Degrees if they’re still thirsty after trying an Ohana Brewing tasting flight.
