A McWhopper? McDonald’s says no thanks to hybrid peace offering from Burger King
Burger King began waving the equivalent of a burger-war white flag at McDonald’s on Wednesday when it proposed the two fast-food giants come together to make a hybrid called the McWhopper for Peace Day. But McDonald’s isn’t having it.
In an open letter to McDonald’s, Burger King proposed creating a burger that would include “all the tastiest bits of your Big Mac and our Whopper.†We’re guessing a double-meat burger using Whopper patties with Big Mac sauce, cheese and a middle bun.
The letter suggested the burger be available at one location on Sept. 21, Peace Day. And all the proceeds would benefit One Peace Day, an organization working toward making Peace Day a day of global unity.
“Let’s end the beef, with beef,†read the end of the letter.
Burger King went as far as to design special packaging and uniforms for a pop-up location in Atlanta, which happens to be between the McDonald’s headquarters in Chicago and Burger King’s headquarters in Miami.
But McDonald’s isn’t ready to make a fast-food baby with its rival.
McDonald’s posted a statement on its Facebook page from CEO Steve Easterbrook to squash Burger King’s McWhopper proposal:
“We love the intention, but think our two brands could do something bigger to make a difference,†reads the statement. “And every day, let’s acknowledge that between us, there is simply a friendly business competition and certainly not the unequaled circumstances of the real pain and suffering of war.â€
The statement ends with “P.S. A simple phone call will do next time.â€
