Edible Institute to take place March 16-17 in Santa Barbara
Edible Communities Publications is rounding up a dynamic group of thinkers and tinkerers from the food industry for Edible Institute, a weekend of talks and workshops centered around the local food movement, scheduled to take place March 16 and 17 at the Hyatt in Santa Barbara.
The local-food magazine has sprouted in communities nationwide -- its Southern California Edible city editions currently include the Westside, Ojai, Santa Barbara, Orange County, San Diego and San Luis Obispo.
The gathering’s keynote speakers will be Marion Nestle, NYU professor and author of “Food Politics: How the Food Industry Influences Nutrition and Health†(a seriously good and informative read) and Kathleen A. Merrigan, Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Edible Institute’s weekend program will feature sessions on food safety, food systems, ocean acidification and the impact on West Coast oysters, the pastured pork movement, school lunch, food writing, and food photography and filmography. Guest speakers will include Paul Willis, founder and manager of Niman Ranch (whose meat can be found on restaurant menus all over L.A.), Danielle Gould of Food & Tech Connect, Food Safety News journalist Helena Bottemiller and an Edible editor, Brian Halweil.
Tickets to the Edible Institute event cost $350 per person and include weekend programs, lunch and entrance to the Food & Drink Gala on Saturday evening. www.ediblecommunities.com.
