N.Y. Fashion Week: Game on at Jeremy Scott
NEW YORK -- The Super Bowl? The Olympics? Baseball’s steroid scandal? All or none of the above? We’re not sure exactly what athletic endeavors inspired the “Gentle Monsters†collection Jeremy Scott sent down the runway at Milk Studios on Wednesday, but we’re sure of one thing -- it hit a home run.
There were shaggy, candy-colored athletic jerseys, hybrid Jeremy Scott for Adidas footwear turned hockey padding that laced up the front all the way from ankle to babymaker, jackets printed to look like the surface of a basketball and a cartoon face-on-a-baseball graphic (complete with red stitching) on sweat shirts, skirts and cropped toppeds.
There were a couple of looks that went for the wardrobe equivalent of a double entendre (unless we’re reading too much into it -- and we don’t think we are), like the men’s suit and women’s dress bearing an allover print of large-scale adhesive bandages (a very Jeremy Scott take on the bandage dress!) and a series of seemingly straightforward white knit tube tops and tube dresses with three plain horizontal bands of color across the top -- exactly matching the knit tube socks worn by the models. One such dress was cut so that the red-tipped “toe†of the sock trailed out behind the model like a train.
We had so much fun watching the clothes go by we almost forgot that the front yielded a Jared Leto sighting -- the “Dallas Buyers Club†actor breezing in at the last minute to plop down in the front row -- but only after apologizing to his cross-the-runway neighbors for holding up the works.
Scott’s clearly playing at the top of his game these days -- and he’s certainly made athletic supporters out of us.
