Lady Gaga and fall fashion’s military trend

Where Lady Gaga goes, the style army follows.

And the army green vinyl overcoat from the Calvin Klein fall 2013 collection by Francisco Costa that Gaga was photographed wearing Thursday in New York City got me thinking about the fall season’s military trend, which is starting to come on strong at retail.

On the affordable end of the spectrum, Gap has camo-print skinny jeans ($48.96), a camo-print canvas tote ($44.95) that comes in pink, and a camo print scarf ($22.95) in neon hues.

For a more subtle taste of camo, I like J. Crew’s canvas camo belt ($34.50), Ralph Lauren’s camo sunglasses ($250 at Saks) and Anniel’s camo ballet flats ($229) at ShopBop.com.

Although I’d have to say that my dream camo print shoes are these Manolo Blahnik “BB†pumps ($665 at Nordstrom). Valentino’s Rockstud navy-and-black ponyhair camo tote ($2295 at Neiman Marcus) is pretty luxe fab as well.

For a more abstract take on camo, Intermix.com has Generation Love’s zebra-stripe/tie dye/camo T-shirt ($88), and ShopBop has Phillip Lim’s preppy-camo pullover sweater ($395). I also like Gryphon’s $762 camo Varsity jacket, which puts a sporty twist on military style.

Looking local, L.A.-based label Delphine’s mountain camo sweatshirt ($132) is a really cool take on the trend, available at Myrtle in Echo Park.

If you’re not into camo, you could just try army green à la Gaga.

Military jackets have been big for a few seasons now, and make a great counterpoint to feminine printed dresses and skirts. For a wear-anywhere classic, you can’t go wrong with Current/Elliott’s army green Infantry jacket ($268), a longer-length style that’s a favorite of Hollywood celebs and real women alike.

Why? Even without the camouflage print, it covers all right places.
