Designer Catherine Martin to get Rodeo Drive Walk of Style Award
Costume and production designer Catherine Martin will receive the Rodeo Drive Walk of Style Award for her work on husband and director Baz Luhrmann’s film adaptation of “The Great Gatsby,†the Rodeo Drive Committee and the city of Beverly Hills announced Wednesday. The award presentation is scheduled to take place Feb. 28 at Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills.
The Rodeo Drive Walk of Style Award was established in 2003 to honor significant contributions to the style and entertainment worlds. Past recipients include fashion designers Giorgio Armani, Tom Ford and Donatella Versace, costume designer Edith Head, photographer Mario Testino and fashion editor Diana Vreeland.
Native Australians, Martin and Luhrmann are known for their collaborative work. In 2001, Martin won two Academy Awards for costume design and art direction-set decoration for Luhrmann’s “Moulin Rouge†and, in 2003, she won a Tony Award for scenic designe for “La Boheme.†Martin was also nominated for Academy Awards in 1997 for “Romeo + Juliet†and in 2009 for “Australia.â€
She’s also a nominee this year for a costume design Oscar for “The Great Gatsby.â€
To create “The Great Gatsby’s†glamorous, 1920s-era costumes — there were 1,700 designs and 500 outfits in all — Martin partnered with Tiffany & Co., Miuccia Prada and Brooks Brothers on designs that were also available for sale off-screen. As set designer, she decorated 42 lavish sets, from the gilded, Art Deco-inspired interiors and manicured lawns of Tom Buchanan’s mansion to the Arts and Crafts-style cottage of Nick Carraway.
An outdoor banner exhibition of Martin’s sketches for “The Great Gatsby†(including the one featured here) will be on view on Rodeo Drive from Feb. 17 to March 2.
Moving from the fantasy of film sets to home interiors, Martin has also been designing furnishings, bedding, wallpaper, paint and more since 2008 for companies such as Designer Rugs, Anthropologie, Porter’s Paints and Mokum fabrics.
She is working with Luhrmann on the stage production “Strictly Ballroom: The Musical,†a new musical version of the play that originated in 1984, which is to premiere at the Sydney Lyric in March.
