The truck driver charged in the New Jersey Turnpike car wreck that killed one person and critically injured three others, including actor Tracy Morgan, has turned himself in, police said Sunday.

Kevin Roper, 35, surrendered Saturday night and was released on $50,000 bail, Trooper Greg Williams of the New Jersey State Police confirmed to the Los Angeles Times.

Williams said there was no indication that alcohol or any other substance played a factor, but he said the crash remained under investigation.

Roper is charged with one count of death by auto and four counts of assault by auto after the tractor-trailer he was driving, which was owned by Wal-Mart Stores Inc., crashed into a limousine van carrying Morgan and other passengers early Saturday morning. Five other vehicles were involved in the chain-reaction wreck.

Morgan and two others remained in critical condition Sunday at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, N.J. The accident killed comedian James “Jimmy Mack†McNair, who often performed with Morgan.

The National Transportation Safety Board will be working with the New Jersey State Police to investigate “safety issues related to commercial trucking and limousine safety†such as vehicle maintenance, medical qualifications, drug/alcohol testing of drivers and equipment and technology, NTSB spokesman Keith Holloway said Sunday.

“At this point, we are just gathering factual information,†Holloway said. “We have not proposed any action.â€
