Stephen Colbert introduces Jon Batiste as ‘Late Show’ bandleader
First the Colbeard, now the bandleader: “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert†is quickly taking shape.
And if it was up to the new host, it may be in the shape of a powdery beignet.
New Orleans-based musician Jon Batiste will lead Colbert’s house band on the “Late Show,†CBS announced Thursday.
“His music makes the audience feel so good, we may have to install a ‘Do Not Make Love’ sign,†Colbert said in a statement.
The new late-night host made his way to the Big Easy to introduce Batiste’s sound to fans — and indulge in a mountain of fluffy beignets — before the show’s Sept. 8 premiere.
Stay Human’s Batiste is a musician, educator and humanitarian and has a master’s degree from Juilliard, the network said. He comes from a long line of Louisiana musicians and has previously collaborated with Prince, Wynton Marsalis and Lenny Kravitz and appeared in Spike Lee’s “Red Hook Summer†and as himself in HBO’s New Orleans-set “Treme.â€
“I’m thrilled! This is a match made in heaven. Get ready for a love riot in late night,†the jazz artist.
