‘Mythbusters’ checks out ‘Breaking Bad’s’ science
“Breaking Bad†is about to end its acclaimed run on AMC, but two guys from another cable outlet are scrambling to pay their respects. Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage of the Discovery Channel series “Mythbusters†are dedicating their Aug. 12 episode to the meth and crime series.
Joining Hyneman and Savage on this episode are “Breaking Bad†creator Vince Gilligan and star Aaron Paul, who plays meth dealer Jesse Pinkman.
But don’t go in execpting Hyneman and Savage to try to re-create Walter White’s supposedly top-notch blue crystal meth. They’ve got other aspects of the series they want to test. Namely, Walt’s use of mercury fulminate as an impact explosive and the ability of a tub full of hydroflouric acid to eat through a tub and the floor below it. Both memorable, iconic scenes in the history of “Breaking Bad,†both called into question for the accuracy of the science on display.

While there are so many other questions from “Breaking Bad†to be answered (would it be possible for Gus to actually walk out of a room missing half his face and adjust his tie before dying?), these are as good a place as any to start.
The special episode of “Mythbusters†airs the day after the final season premiere of “Breaking Bad.†With just eight more episodes to go, there’s only a few more chances for Walter White to dazzle us with his impressive (and possibly completely made-up) mastery of chemical compounds.
