Michael Strahan closes in on a deal to join ‘Good Morning America’
Here’s hoping Michael Strahan likes being a morning person. The former football star and current “Live With Kelly and Michael†co-host is set to join “Good Morning America.â€
Strahan would appear as part of the morning show’s current ensemble, not as a replacement, a person with knowledge of the situation told The Times.
The 42-year-old former New York Giants defensive end would appear on the top-rated morning show in a part-time capacity, dropping in a couple of days a week, allowing time to fulfill his duties alongside Kelly Ripa on “Live With Kelly and Michael†at 9 a.m.
ABC News executives are said to have begun talks with Strahan months ago, pleased with his performance during the times he substituted for Robin Roberts last year while she was out on sick leave, and heated up in recent weeks.
CRITICS’ PICKS: What to watch, where to go, what to eat
An official announcement of the news, which was first reported by CNN, is expected to come later this week once the deal is completed, the source told The Times. A start date was not known.
An ABC representative would not comment.
The addition, once official, would come just as “GMA†has undergone some lineup changes. Earlier this week, Josh Elliott announced he was leaving his post to join NBC Sports, and ABC News President Ben Sherwood quickly announced Amy Robach as Elliott’s replacement. And longtime weatherman Sam Champion moved over to The Weather Channel last winter.
