‘Game of Thrones’ ’ Emilia Clarke’s costume advice: ‘Take it off’

As “Game of Thrones†has grown in popularity, its characters have begun to become popular subjects for cosplay at conventions and during Halloween. But according to “Thrones†star Emilia Clarke, who plays Daenerys Targaryen, one of the most popular characters on the show, there’s a very R-rated trick to make her character’s costume more authentic: “Take it off.â€

Yes, there’s copious amounts of nudity on the HBO series, more than you’re likely to find at your local Halloween costume party, but she did offer a suggestion a little more realistic for would-be Daeneryses: “Just a toy dragon will definitely help take that costume from being just another costume to being a ‘Game of Thrones’ costume.â€

Clarke, who just received her first Emmy nomination for supporting actress in a drama series for the role, appeared via live video chat to answer Times readers’ questions on everything from learning two made-up languages (Dothraki and High Valyrian) to “Game of Thrones†fans.

For the record, Clarke said, Dothraki is much harder to learn than Valyrian. “I remember the first couple of days filming in Dothraki, and I was petrified and was convinced that I would not do it justice,†she admitted.

She continued, “It was very difficult having kind of the two brains working simultaneously. Remembering the language and also being in the character.â€

Clarke also fondly remembered Jason Momoa, who played Kahl Drogo, her on-screen husband in the first season of the series.

“Jason is a forever friend,†she said.
