One of TV’s oddest shows, “Wilfred,†which stars Elijah Wood in an anthropomorphic relationship with his neighbor’s dog (Jason Gann), has been picked up by FXX for a fourth — and final — season.

Based on a critically acclaimed Australian series of the same name, “Wilfred†was initially developed by FX Networks in 2010, with Wood’s casting as a depressed young man named Ryan being announced in late June of that year.

Wood’s character was described by David Zuckerman (“Family Guyâ€), who adapted the show for American television, as “an introverted and troubled young man struggling unsuccessfully to make his way in the world until he forms a unique friendship with Wilfred, his neighbor’s canine pet.â€

The neighbor in question is played by Fiona Gubelmann.

The series premiered in June 2011, when it became the highest-ranking debut sitcom ever for FX Networks. It continued to hold its own in the top 10 of cable television shows during its first season. During Season 3 it averaged just under 1 million viewers.

The final season will have a 10-episode run next year.
