First Emmy Awards of the season are mostly for work in animation
“The Simpsons,†“Portlandia†and the Grammy Awards were among the programs honored in the first batch of winners of the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards.
Most winners won’t be announced for another month, but on Wednesday the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences released the names of 10 winners from what it calls its juried categories, in which the entries are not in competition with one another and one or more may be deemed worthy of the Emmy.
There were six winners for individual achievement in animation: Andy Ristaino for character design in “Adventure Time,†Cartoon Network; Jenny Gase-Baker for background paint and Joseph Holt for art direction in “Disney Mickey Mouse Croissant de Triomphe,†Disney.com; Alberto Mielgo for art direction in “Disney TRON: Uprising,†Disney XD; Andy Bialk for character design in “Dragons: Riders of Berk,†Cartoon Network; and Paul Wee for character animation in “The Simpsons,†Fox.

In the category of costumes for a variety program or a special, Emmys went to Marina Toybina and Courtney Webster for “The 55th Annual Grammy Awards,†CBS; Sarah Beers, Rachael Leah Greene and Lisa Faibish for “The Men Who Build America,†History; and Amanda Needham and Monika Schmidt for “Portlandia,†IFC.
HBO’s “Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God,†about the Catholic Church’s efforts to cover up the child abuse scandal involving priests, was honored for exceptional merit in documentary filmmaking.
These Emmys will be presented at the Creative Arts ceremony Sept. 15. The Emmys in acting, writing and directing categories will be handed out Sept. 22.
