It’s officially official: Dan Harmon back as ‘Community’ show runner

After weeks of speculation (and then tweeted confirmation), it’s official: Dan Harmon is returning as show runner of NBC’s “Community†for its coming season.

Sony, the studio behind the show, confirmed the news early Monday morning; NBC followed up with a news release Monday evening.

Harmon was pushed out of his position last year after much behind-the-scenes discord. He was replaced by David Guarascio and Moses Port, who were brought on to take command of the show’s fourth season. The passing of the baton was not a smooth one, with fans and critics alike noting the uneven transition. Harmon has been tapped to reclaim that “Community†feeling. He’ll also recover his title as executive producer.

NBC and Sony also confirmed that Chris McKenna, a writer and producer who has worked on previous seasons of the show, would be returning as executive producer; he had departed the series last May.

The beleaguered comedy is returning for a fifth season on the network. No premiere date for the new season has yet been set.
