CW’s ‘Arrow,’ ‘Vampire Diaries,’ ‘Supernatural’ get early renewal
The CW announced Monday it has given early pickups for next season to freshman superhero drama “Arrow†and veteran series “The Vampire Diaries†and “Supernatural.â€
That takes “Arrow†into a second season, while “The Vampire Diaries†and “Supernatural†will enter their fifth and ninth seasons, respectively.
“We said last year that one of our goals was to establish building blocks to grow on, and now with our new hit ‘Arrow’ and fan favorite ‘Supernatural’ on Wednesday night, and the continued success of ‘The Vampire Diaries’ on Thursday, we’ve been able to do that,†said network President Mark Pedowitz in a statement. “Not only do ‘Arrow,’ ‘Supernatural’ and ‘The Vampire Diaries’ perform well on-air, they’re also extremely successful for us both digitally and socially. I’m thrilled to have all three shows returning to our schedule next season.â€
“Arrow†was a breakout hit for the network. The Wednesday drama, based on DC Comics’ “Green Arrow,†premiered in October to 4.1 million viewers — making it the CW’s most-watched telecast of any show in three years and its most-watched premiere since “Vampire Diaries.†It currently stands as the network’s most-watched show, averaging 4.3 million viewers. It’s been paired with “Supernatural,†which has seen bumps in ratings from last season, particularly in the demographics of viewers ages 18 to 34 and 18 to 49.
“The Vampire Diaries†isn’t doing too shabbily either: It’s the network’s highest-rated series with adults ages 18 to 34 and women 18-34, and it creates quite the buzz in the digital and social arenas.
All three shows will return in the fall.
