NEW YORK -- MTV is taking a turn to the horror side, greenlighting a pilot based on Wes Craven’s “Scream†film franchise.

The network will collaborate with “Scream†studio Dimesnion Films on the title, with Craven directing an hourlong pilot. A potential series, which is currently seeking writers, would begin airing in the summer of 2014; plot details for the series were not revealed, though it is expected to play on the mythology of the clever serial killer Ghostface.

The network is expected to make the “Scream†announcement at its annual upfront presentation Thursday in New York.

Genre-infused teen fare has become popular on both big and small screens in the wake of the success of the “Twilight†franchise. MTV itself has attempted an episodic spin on a genre film with its brooding “Teen Wolf†series.

Meanwhile, series greenlights expected to be announced at the upfront include the one-hour nonscripted “Generation Cryo,†which looks at the lives of children conceived by anonymous sperm donors. It will focus particularly on a 17-year-old woman who recently learned her donor fathered more than a dozen children, and who sets out on a mission to find them and their father.

And the network’s “Nurse Nation†will examine a group of young travel nurses assigned to a new hospital in an unfamiliar city, in a show that gives an “ER†spin to its popular “Real World†concept.

MTV also announced that it has renewed “Snooki & JWOWW†for a third season, continuing the exploits of the former “Jersey Shore†cast members. It also confirmed Show Tracker’s report Wednesday of a new dating show called “The Hook-Up†hosted by “Guy Code†personality Andrew Schulz, as well as an MTV 2 “Guy Code†spinoff titled “Guy Court.†And it announced July 9 as the premiere date for “Nick Cannon Wild N Out,†the 2.0 version of the comic show that is returning to MTV2.

The upfront is MTV’s first since TV veteran Susanne Daniels came in to run programming at the network in late 2012.
