David Byrne, Los Lobos return to Greek Theatre for 2014 season
In the first season to come together after last year’s closing of the long-running Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, the similarly sized Greek Theatre in Griffith Park is unveiling a noticeably busier 2014 season, with shows by many of the acts that had played the Gibson in years past.
David Byrne will headline a May 8 show built around the music of Nigerian electro-pop musician William Onyeabor also featuring members of Hot Chip, Bloc Party, LCD Soundsystem and others; Los Lobos will host the band’s third Cinco de Mayo Festival on May 3 with Ozomatli and Mariachi El Bronx; New Order will perform on July 13; Dierks Bentley tops a multi-artist country bill on Aug. 8; and Tejano band Intocable arrives on Oct. 24.
In fact, the Greek has a substantial slate of Latino and Hispanic acts confirmed, also including Argentine jazz pianist Raúl di Blasio (May 31), Lila Downs (Aug. 22), Mexican rocker Alejandra Guzman (Aug. 23), nouveau flamenco group Gipsy Kings (Aug. 30) and Spanish singer-songwriter Enrique Bunbury (Sept. 5).

Among the classic-rock acts that will stop at the Greek this year are Crosby, Stills & Nash (Oct. 4), Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band (July 19), ZZ Top and Jeff Beck (Aug. 13), WAR with Cheech & Chong and the Family Stone (May 24), Chicago and REO Speedwagon (Aug. 1), Michael McDonald and Toto (Aug. 7), Foreigner, Styx and former Eagles guitarist Don Felder (July 26) and a Pink Floyd tribute with Brit Floyd World Discovery Tour 2014 (May 28).
Detroit singer and songwriter Rodriguez, subject of the Oscar-winning 2012 documentary feature “Searching for Sugar Man,†returns to Los Angeles for a show at the Greek on May 30.
Numerous ‘80s and ‘90s acts that are back on the road will visit the Greek, including Goo Goo Dolls (July 22), Sugar Ray, Smash Mouth, Blues Traveler and Uncle Kracker (Aug. 12), Counting Crows and Toad the Wet Sprocket (Aug. 17), Howard Jones, Tom Bailey of the Thompson Twins, Midge Ure of Ultravox , China Crisis and others (Aug. 29).

The season opens May 2 with the streetcorner doo-wop group Under the Streetlamp, and is schedule to extend through Nov. 1 with a show by the Tedeschi Trucks Band and guitarist-singer Gary Clark Jr.
Tickets go on sale today, March 7, at 10 a.m. through the Greek’s Premier Access Season Subscription (P.A.S.S.) at www.GreekPass.com, where full-season information can be found. P.A.S.S. members also get early access to buy tickets for shows at other venues including Steve Winwood’s June 24 concert at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre, a Boston-Cheap Trick double bill July 29 at the Forum in Inglewood and several shows at the Grove National Theatre in Anaheim.
