The success of the music of ‘Empire’: By the numbers
Fox’s breakout hip-hop soap opera “Empire†saw its soundtrack compilation land a rare No. 1 atop of the Billboard 200 this week, after moving 130,000 units in sales and streams, according to Nielsen Music.
The compilation marks the first time a TV soundtrack debuted on top of the charts since 2010, when Fox’s high school musical “Glee†had three of its compilations hit No. 1. It’s also the first time a network show saw an album featuring original music land at the top since since “Miami Vice†-- and that was 30 years ago.
Here’s a breakdown of the figures behind “Empire’s†music success.
31,166,000 total streams for the entire season one catalog.
4,240,000 streams for Jussie Smollett’s “Good Enough,†the most streamed song of the season.
1,114,141 the amount of times “Drip Drop†was played on Spotify.
1,109,000 total song downloads.
165,000 downloads for the most popular track, “You’re So Beautiful†(there’s a number of versions, but fans took an extra liking to the full cast version).
110,000 total album sales.
44,000 physical copies of the soundtrack were sold in its first week.
60% of the soundtrack’s sales came from digital album sales.
44 original songs appeared during the season.
11 recording artists guest-appeared on Season 1.
