‘Divergent’: Trailer for Shailene Woodley movie hits the Web
“The future belongs to those who know where they belong,†says Kate Winslet early in the new trailer for “Divergentâ€, setting up its tale of conformity and its discontents.
Directed by Neil Burger and based on a bestselling novel by Veronica Roth, “Divergent†aims to capitalize on the popularity of dark young-adult adaptations, with the latest installment of “The Hunger Games†franchise heading for theaters next week. The Burger movie, which stars Shailene Woodley and Theo James, has a similar date to the first “Hunger Games,†heading to theaters on March 21.
Set in a future in which people are officially divided into factions based on their personalities, a young woman (Woodley) is told she will never fit into any one group, marking her as “Divergent.†Having joined the faction known as “Dauntless,†she meets their leader Four (James) before uncovering a conspiracy to destroy all Divergents. As Winslet, playing main villain and Erudite faction leader Jeanine Matthews, declares in the trailer, “Divergents threaten the system. It won’t be safe until they are removed.†(You can watch the trailer below.)
The film, produced by “Hunger Games†studio Summit Lionsgate, also stars Miles Teller, Zoe Kravitz, Tony Goldwyn. Maggie Q and Ashley Judd. The screenplay is written by Evan Daugherty and Vanessa Taylor.
The trailer was introduced via an unusual Burger-hosted live chat on YouTube, which he held alongside a group of fixtures from the site, people with channels (and monikers) such as “CourtneyPants,†“Katers17,†“MagicofRahat†and “xxFluffyPunkxx.†The future, indeed.
