‘The Square,’ ‘Inside Man’ win top IDA documentary award honors

Jehane Noujaim’s “The Square,†Netflix’s first major film acquisition that chronicles a group of Egyptian activists as they battle leaders and regimes, won the best feature award at the International Documentary Assn.’s 2013 IDA Awards on Friday evening at the DGA.

Josh Izenberg’s “Slomo,†which looks at neurologist turned roller blader Dr. John Kitchin, won for short film.

CNN’s “Inside Man,†hosted by documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, earned the limited series award. The continuing series award went to PBS’ “Independent Lens.â€

IDA’s career achievement award was presented to Oscar and Emmy Award-winning Alex Gibney (“Taxi to the Dark Side,†“The Armstrong Lieâ€). Geralyn Dreyfous, co-founder of Impact Partners and founder of the Utah Film Center, received the IDA Amicus Award. Dreyfous’ executive producing and producing credits include the Oscar-winner “Born Into Brothels†and “The Square.â€

Filmmaker Laura Poitras (“The Oathâ€) earned the IDA’s Courage Under Fire Award in recognition of “conspicuous bravery in the pursuit of truth.â€
