‘Gravity’ co-writer Jonas Cuaron nabs greenlight for ‘Desierto’
Jonas Cuaron’s script “Desierto†was such an inspiration to his father, Alfonso, for its stripped-down narrative and immersive character experience that the older man asked his son to collaborate with him on another project with the same features.
It would become “Gravity,†the upcoming Sandra Bullock-, George Clooney-starrer that opened the Venice Film Festival.
Now the younger Cuaron will begin filming his feature, starring Gael Garcia Bernal, this October.

The Spanish-language film, co-written with Mateo Garcia, explores the story of illegal immigrants who cross the border into the United States and end up running for their lives from an American who has taken border patrol into his own hands. While they fight for their lives, the two immigrants fall for each other.
“Desierto†will be produced by Alfonso and his brother, Carlos Cuaron, along with Alex Garcia, the head of the newly created film corporation AG Studios.
“Gravity,†which bows in the U.S. on Oct. 4, has received rave reviews from its international premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
