Alejandro G. Inarritu won the Golden Globe for director Sunday night for his work on the beautiful, brutal western thriller “The Revenant.â€

Inarritu won the screenplay Globe last year for “Birdman,†a movie that would go on to net him three Oscars as producer, director and writer.

“Every film is so difficult to make but I have to tell, in my experience, this has been the most difficult journey,†Inarritu said, accepting the Globe, of making “The Revenant.†“I was lucky to be saved and rescued by an incredible crew, cast, producers that we struggled for so many months ... in very difficult conditions to make this film happen.â€

“The Revenant†follows a frontiersman (Leonardo DiCaprio) forced to survive a series of dire scenarios, including a marauding mama bear, after being abandoned and left for dead by members of his party.

“This is a film about adventure, and it’s man against man, and man against nature, and a bear against a man, and a man against a mountain,†Inarritu told The Times in an earlier interview.
