Zac Efron’s ‘Awkward Moment’ on ‘Today’? Being asked about rehab
That awkward moment when you’re asked about rehab on live, national television? Yeah, that’s what happened to Zac Efron on Tuesday.
The former Disney star hit the “Today†show with his costars Michael B. Jordan and Miles Teller to promote their upcoming raunchy rom-com, “That Awkward Moment.†And host Savannah Guthrie somewhat appeased those who have been keeping up with Efron’s escapades, specifically reports that he had been to rehab for a drug addiction.
“I know last year was a little bit hard,†Guthrie said. “There were reports that you’d gone to rehab. Anything you want to share about that? I think mostly your fans just want to know how you’re doing and that you’re OK.â€

Those reports indeed said that Efron secretly went to rehab (twice) and another report indicated that the actor broke his jaw following a freak accident at his Los Angeles home.
But Efron, who also worked as a producer on “That Awkward Moment,†had a straight-faced -- albeit protracted -- answer at the ready.
“I’m in the best place I’ve ever been,†the 26-year-old said, without addressing rehab or the alleged drug addiction specifically. “I’ve never been this happy before.â€
Then, he quickly navigated the tangent back to the promotional point.
“I’m extraordinarily grateful for these guys and to be here promoting this movie,†he said. “I don’t know. Things are good. So, thank you for asking.â€
Awkward and a half. For Savannah, no?
Later, the film’s official Twitter account got a little cheeky, referring to Efron’s jaw-breaking incident.
â€.@zacefron’s awkward moment? ‘When I slipped and hit my face on the fountain in my house. You know what’s cool?! A fountain in your house!’†said the tweet, which was later retweeted from Efron’s account.
His costars previously lampooned him about the injury, claiming it occurred while he was with a girl “giving her the worst sexual experience of her life,†they joked to E! News in December.
Joking aside, Efron appeared grateful after the TV spot, despite a seemingly rough exit for the actors, writing on his WhoSay account, “Thanks guys at the @TodayShow for hanging in there when it got crazy on the way out. ;-) And shout out to the NYPD for keeping us safe. It means a lot. #awkwardtour #thatawkwardmomentâ€
“That Awkward Moment†hits theaters Jan. 31.
