Robin Quivers reveals 15-month cancer battle on Howard Stern show
Robin Quivers, Howard Stern’s longtime sidekick, revealed her year-plus battle with cancer Monday and announced she is now cancer-free.
Turns out Quivers, 61, has been doing the show from home for the last 15 months while undergoing chemotherapy and radiation for endometrial cancer.
Quivers, 61, first noticed a problem while attending an away wedding, where she realized she couldn’t urinate, and headed to an ER for help. Upon returning home she saw other doctors who discovered she had a cancerous mass in her pelvic region.
It took 12 hours of surgery in May 2012 to remove the tumor, which according to a recap on the fan website MarksFriggen had attached itself to every organ in Quivers’ pelvis. The first round of docs were unfamiliar with the type of cancer, she said, and were looking only to prolong her life.
Quivers switched to Sloan Kettering, she told Stern, which was familiar with this type of cancer — it was growing in her uterine tissue — and said it would go for a cure.
“I gotta be honest, I thought she was a goner,†Stern told listeners Monday, according to ABC News. “I can’t tell you how dire everything seemed.â€
At one point there was a question of whether Robin would lose her colon, which would have meant a colostomy bag for the rest of her live.
“I’ve always been a quality of life kind of person, and I didn’t want to live in a certain state,†Quivers told Stern as they discussed that possibility.
But about three months ago came the good news.
“I go into my doctor’s office,†Quivers said. “She just looks at everything, she goes, ‘You’re cured. You’re done, because you’re cured.’â€
