Lady Gaga leads off 49 stars honoring 49 victims of the Orlando shooting
Lady Gaga and Chris Pine are the first two of 49 famous faces seen in a memorial video put out Wednesday by the Human Rights Campaign in remembrance of 49 people killed in the June 12 shooting at Orlando’s Pulse nightclub.
One by one, the celebrities – many of them professionally affiliated with Ryan Murphy, whose production company put together the hypnotic piece – share names, ages and a wide range of details about each of the victims who died on Latin night at the gay club.
A sampling: Luis Daniel Wilson-Leon, 37, and John Carlos Mendez Perez, 35, fell in love after meeting at the perfume store where Perez worked and later running into each other at a club. Eddie Justice, 30, was an accountant who texted his mother during the attack. John Carlos Nieves Rodriguez, 37, started working at age 15 to help his family and finally bought his first home last year. Leroy Valentin Fernandez, 25, had moved to Orlando to take care of his mom and liked to blast Adele songs in the office at his new job. Anthony Luis Loreano Disla, 25, moved from Puerto Rico three years ago to become a choreographer.
HRC’s Stop the Hate project frames the shooting – the largest in U.S. history – completely in terms of anti-LGBTQ violence and gun control. In keeping with the spirit of the Don’t Name Them movement, there is no mention of the identity of the gunman.
“For too long, a toxic combination of anti-LGBTQ hate and easy access to guns has put LGBTQ people at disproportionate risk of violence and murder,†HRC says in the description with the video on YouTube.
"It's time to stop the bleeding," Gaga says in wrapping up the video, followed by Pine, saying: “Let's show the world that love conquers hate." The video ends with a contact-your-legislators call to action in support of gun control and hate-crime laws.
For the names of all who died, put aside 18 minutes and watch the sobering video.
