Mindy Kaling goes glam at Costume Designers Guild Awards
Mindy Kaling was stunning in a custom-made azure gown at Saturday’s Costume Designers Guild Awards.
Her sheath of choice was a one-shouldered, lace and blue-hued confection from costume designer Salvador Perez Jr., who also happens to be the president of the Costume Designers Guild.
Earlier this month, “The Mindy Project†star and creator shared the nascence of the gown with a sneak peek at its muslin incarnation.
“My costume designer Sal Perez is the president of the Costume Designers Guild and he is designing a gown for me for their awards,†the 34-year-old captioned a snapshot.
“First he fits me with a version of the gown in white muslin, which Sivorn is measuring. This is one of the best parts of my job.â€

Perez dubbed his model a “#diva†-- in the best sense of the word -- when he shared a picture of them on the red carpet at the show.
“I wanted something colorful and dramatic,†Perez told People. “I showed her some sketches and she selected one. Before I was a costume designer, I ran costume workrooms for movies, so designing and making clothes is second nature to me.â€
The fashion-forward “The Office†writer and alum was on hand Saturday to present an award with costar and “Mindy Project†co-writer Ike Barinholtz at the 16th annual show at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. Perez, who was not nominated that evening, has designed the colorful and high-end ensembles of Kaling alter-ego Dr. Mindy Lahiri on the Fox comedy since 2012.

“Salvador had a vision and I was just excited to be part of it — I trust him implicitly,†Kaling told the magazine. “The color, the silhouette, the train, it’s all decadence and drama, cut in the most flattering shape. It felt like I was getting married, so much attention was paid to me looking my absolute best. When you have a gown custom-fit to you, there’s not the hell of trying on dresses and your ego getting hurt because it doesn’t fit in certain places.â€
Kaling was sure to give Perez’s CDG president’s letter a shout-out on social media.
The funnywoman also shared a snapshot of herself with Barinholtz at the awards show and cheekily captioned it with, “Beautiful interracial couple moments at awards show.â€
Kaling and Perez also got props from “Hunger Games†actress Elizbeth Banks, who plays Capitol fashionista Effie Trinket in the fantasy films.
“I loved your Sal Perez dress last night - congrats to you both for killing it,†Banks tweeted at the pair.
“thanks Liz!†Kaling replied, “I can’t wait to see @MrSalPerez’s new Bella looks for the sequel!!!â€
The night’s big winners included Patricia Norris for “12 Years a Slave,†Suzy Benzinger for “Blue Jasmine†and Trish Summerville for “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire†in film, according to All the Rage. In television, awards went to Ellen Mirojnick for “Behind the Candelabra,†Caroline McCall for “Downton Abbey†and Tom Broecker for “House of Cards.â€
“American Hustle†star and Oscar nominee Amy Adams was given the honorary Lacoste Spotlight Award, and producer Judd Apatow was given the distinguished collaborator award.
