Miley Cyrus to Barbara Walters: ‘I wouldn’t change being engaged’

Leave it to Barbara Walters to get Miley Cyrus to open up about her ex-fiancé Liam Hemsworth.

Wait, didn’t Ellen DeGeneres already do that? Yes, but 2013 has the unfortunate moniker of becoming the year of Miley Cyrus.

Barb asked Cyrus the really tough question about whether she believed she agreed too quickly to getting engaged to “The Hunger Games†star. It turns out little Miley was afraid of being alone.

“I was so scared of ever being alone, and I think conquering that fear, this year, was actually bigger than any other transition that I had this entire year,†Cyrus told Walters in her “Barbara Walters Presents: The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2013†interview.

Cyrus and Hemsworth met on the set of “The Last Song†in 2009 and got engaged in 2012. But they called it quits in September soon after Cyrus received a rash of press following her controversial MTV Video Music Awards performance in August and upon news that Hemsworth had been spotted kissing model Eiza González.

The 21-year-old’s latest album, “Bangerz,†also chronicles their love story. One track, “Drive,†goes, “I was crazy thinking you were mine, it was all just a lie.â€

When Walters asked her what that lie was, Cyrus backpedaled.

“I don’t think there was any, any lies,†she said.

Mmmkay.

Her latest takeaway is to focus on being herself.

“I don’t ever want to have to need someone again, where you feel like without them you can’t be yourself,†she tells Walters.

“I think I’ll want that in the times that it needs to be,†she said. “I don’t think I realized what 19 truly is, and I got engaged at 19, and I definitely wouldn’t change being engaged. It was so fun wearing a fat rock for a few years. But now, I just feel like I can actually be happy. I wait for those moments of silence, when I’m just at my house, by myself.â€

Other celebrities recognized in Walters annual list include Hemsworth’s “Hunger Games†costar and Oscar-winner Jennifer Lawrence, spotlight-ready couple Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, “Good Morning America’s†Robin Roberts, the cast of “Duck Dynasty,†NSA whistle-blower Edward Snowden and the royal baby, Prince George, son of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and third in line to rule the United Kingdom.
