Leonardo DiCaprio donates $15 million through his namesake foundation
Leonardo DiCaprio is seriously dedicated to saving the planet: a quantifiable $15-million worth of dedicated.
The actor’s environmental Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation has donated that sum in grants to more than 30 organizations that are, in his words, “implementing innovative and impactful environmental projects†worldwide.
“The destruction of our planet continues at a pace we can no longer afford to ignore,†the “Wolf of Wall Street†star said Tuesday on his website. “I am proud to support these organizations who are working to solve humankind’s greatest challenge. We have a responsibility to innovate a future where the habitability of our planet does not come at the expense of those who inhabit it.â€
The wide-ranging organizations listed in the announcement, including Amazon Watch, National Geographic: Pristine Seas, Save the Elephants and the World Wildlife Fund, are pursuing “concrete and early-phase solutions†to protect key species and threatened marine and terrestrial ecosystems,†the Oscar-nominated philanthropist said.
The foundation, which started in 1998, also aims to enable indigenous communities to be “the long-term stewards and protectors of their natural resources.â€
The charity’s grantmaking operation has funded more than 70 projects in 40-plus countries since 2010.
In 2013, the DiCaprio donated $3 million through LDF to help the World Wildlife Fund protect and nurture tigers in Nepal.
Last year, he enlisted enlisted his superstar friends Selena Gomez, Jared Leto, Bono, Marion Cotillard and Robin Thicke to help raise more than $25 million at a gala for the foundation, People reported.
