Displeased Lady Gaga begs fans’ forgiveness after ‘Artpop’ debacle
Lady Gaga’s “Artpop†is apparently not all she wanted it to be, and in explaining the delay in her “Do What U Want†video, the performer took some time to beg her fans for their forgiveness — even as she slammed the people in her operation who she said didn’t have her back.
Oh, yeah, she also indulged in a bit of self-aggrandizement, but that’s pretty much standard Gaga, right? Part of the show.
Regarding the “DWUW†video, she said she was given only a week to plan and execute it, and that time frame didn’t work for her. All this tied to an album that debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts in November but dropped off precipitously in sales after that.
“It is very devastating for someone like me, I devote every moment of my life to creating fantasies for you,†she said in a missive posted on her Little Monsters website Sunday under the title “DWUW Video.â€
“All my my most successful videos were planned over a period of time when I was rested and my creativity was honored. Those who have betrayed me gravely mismanaged my time and health and left me on my own to damage control any problems that ensued as a result. Millions of dollars are not enough for some people. They want billions. Then they need trillions. I was not enough for some people. They wanted more.â€
She did say she was “grateful to the photographers and designers who have always stood by me to make sure my fans are never aware of the things that happen behind the scenes†but said that this time around, after her hip surgery, she was too sick, tired and sad to control the damage on her own. Her label, she said, didn’t know what was up.
“I never thought after all the years of hard work that those I called friends and partners would ever care so little at a time I needed them the most,†Gaga said.
(She and longtime manager Troy Carter parted ways in early November, shortly before “Artpop’s†release.)
So much for the explanation. Next came the appeal for support.
“Give me a chance to show you the meaning of seeing art all around you,†she said. “Open your hearts to me again that I may show you the joy of us coming together through our talents, that we are stronger as a unit than when we are alone.â€
Later, she would amp it up in closing: “I love you. Forgive me monsters. Forgive me ARTPOP. You are my whole world.â€
Dang. Girlfriend’s kind of down on herself, we’re thinking.
But not enough to completely squelch her sense of self: “Let me be for you the Goddess that I know I truly am,†she offered to her fans.
Yes, she really did say that.
Still, the Little Monsters apparently have something to look forward to: “The next few months of ARTPOP will truly be its beginning. Because those who did not care about ARTPOP’s success are now gone, and the dreams I have been planning can now come to fruition.â€
Hey, sometimes you just have to clean house, right? Or in this case, “clean haus.â€
Haus of Gaga, that is.
