Demi Lovato explains how beau Wilmer Valderrama stood by her during her downward spiral
Demi Lovato isn’t mincing words when it comes to her man and her sobriety.
The “Cool for the Summer†singer opened up about her health struggles and her relationship with “That ‘70s Show†alum Wilmer Valderrama in Cosmopolitan’s September issue, which she covers looking sparkly, sultry and fabulous.
Lovato, 22, and Valderrama, 35, have dated on and off since she turned 18 (an issue he took a lot of heat for), and when they did split, it was mostly on her.
She checked herself into rehab in late 2010 after a stretch of erratic behavior, later revealing that she had been dealing with an eating disorder, cutting, bipolar disorder and addictions to alcohol and cocaine.
“The only times we ever broke up were when I was relapsing, whether it was drugs or in a bad place and rebelling against everybody, not just him,†the 22-year-old told the mag. “People say that relapses happen before you use. Your mind starts setting up the relapse before you take that drink or that first hit. The times we’d broken up, I had already gone to that place of, ‘Yeah, this is what’s happening.’ I didn’t realize it at the time, but I just wanted to sabotage everything around me so that I could sabotage myself.â€
Valderrama did not give up on their relationship though, she said
“We started dating when I turned 18… Right after that, I went to rehab. People told him, ‘You should probably leave. She’s on a spiral, and you’re going to be sucked down with it.’ But he was like, ‘I’m not leaving. This is somebody I really care about.’ We relate on a lot of levels.â€
She’s since become a mental-health advocate and marked three years of sobriety last March.
Cosmo’s September issue goes on sale Aug. 11.
