SAG Awards: ‘Breaking Bad,’ ‘30 Rock’ lead TV nominations
The nominations for the 20th Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced Wednesday morning. In the television categories, cable once again ruled the pack, with “Breaking Bad,†“Homeland,†“Behind the Candelabra†and “Boardwalk Empire†each receiving multiple nods. But upstart Netflix also picked up nominations for its series, “House of Cards†and “Arrested Development.â€
The ensemble of the HBO fantasy series “Game of Thrones†earned a nomination in the drama category, where it will compete against defending champ “Downton Abbey†(PBS), Emmy-winner “Breaking Bad†(AMC), “Boardwalk Empire†(HBO) and “Homeland†(Showtime).
As at the Emmys, the SAG Awards showed more love for broadcast television in the comedy categories. “Modern Family†(ABC), “30 Rock†(NBC) and “The Big Bang Theory†(CBS) all earned ensemble nominations. Netflix also picked up a nomination for its revival of “Arrested Development,†while the HBO series “Veep†earned its first nod in the category.

The leads of “Breaking Bad,†Anna Gunn and Bryan Cranston, were both nominated. Cranston will compete against new entry Kevin Spacey, nominated for his role in the online series “House of Cardsâ€; Steve Buscemi (“Boardwalk Empireâ€); Jeff Daniels (“The Newsroomâ€); and Peter Dinklage (“Game of Thronesâ€) for the honor of outstanding performance by a male actor in a drama series.
Gunn is competing in a crowded field that Clark Gregg, when announcing the nominees Wednesday morning, aptly referred to as “Murderers’ Row.†Other nominees for outstanding performance by a female actor in a drama series are Kerry Washington (“Scandalâ€), Maggie Smith (“Downton Abbeyâ€), Jessica Lange (“American Horror Story: Covenâ€) and Claire Danes (“Homelandâ€).
On the comedy side, the stars of NBC’s “30 Rock,†which ended its run in January, went out on a high note. Tina Fey was nominated alongside Edie Falco (“Nurse Jackie,†Showtime), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veepâ€), Mayim Bialik (“The Big Bang Theoryâ€) and Julie Bowen (“Modern Familyâ€) in the female actor category.

Her co-star, the embattled Alec Baldwin, picked up his final nod for outstanding performance by a male actor in a comedy series. Also nominated are Jason Bateman (“Arrested Developmentâ€), Jim Parsons (“The Big Bang Theoryâ€), Ty Burrell (“Modern Familyâ€) and Don Cheadle (“House of Liesâ€).
HBO dominated the television movie or miniseries categories with the biopics “Phil Spector†and “Behind the Candelabra.†Michael Douglas and Matt Damon, who played lovers in the latter film, both received nominations, as did “Phil Spector†star Al Pacino. Also nominated are Jeremy Irons (“The Hollow Crown,†PBS) and Rob Lowe (“Killing Kennedyâ€).
The stars of the Sundance miniseries “Top of the Lake,†Holly Hunter and Elisabeth Moss, each received a nomination in the female actor category. Other nominees are Helen Mirren (“Phil Spectorâ€), Angela Bassett (“Betty and Coretta,†Lifetime), and Helena Bonham Carter (“Burton & Taylorâ€).
The SAG Awards will be held Jan. 18 at the Shrine Exposition Hall in Los Angeles and will be broadcast live on TNT and TBS at 5 p.m. PST.
