The Emmy nominations were announced Thursday morning, and in the comedy series category, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences spread the love among cable and broadcast networks.

Three-time winner “Modern Family†picked up its fourth-straight nomination in the category. The ABC sitcom about the extended Dunphy-Pritchett-Tucker-Delgado family remains one of television’s most popular sitcoms, despite a ratings dip in its fourth season.

“30 Rock,†an Emmy darling since its first season on the air, earned its seventh and final nomination for comedy series. The critically beloved but consistently low-rated series, created by and starring Tina Fey, concluded its run on NBC in January.

Also on the network side, the unstoppable “Big Bang Theory†got its third straight nod. The Chuck Lorre-created series, television’s highest-rated comedy with an average of 20 million viewers a week, centers on a clique of nerdy friends and stars multiple Emmy-winner Jim Parsons.

“Veep,†HBO’s profanity-laced political satire about a female vice president played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, picked up its second straight nomination for comedy series.

So too did “Girls,†the network’s other remaining female-driven sitcom. Written by and starring Lena Dunham as an aimless twentysomething Brooklynite, the polarizing series continues to be an awards favorite, in spite of meager ratings and what some saw as a sloppy second season.

The absence of long-running favorite “Curb Your Enthusiasm†left room for one new entry in the category. That spot went to another groundbreaking cable series starring a cranky comedian as himself, FX’s “Louie.†Writer-director-producer-star Louis C.K. has been nominated multiple times for his work on the formally experimental, critically adored show, but this is a first comedy nod for the series itself.
