Gay marriage rulings: Twitter reacts with #MarriageEqualityBroadway

Broadway is “not just for gays anymore!†Neil Patrick Harris playfully sang to kick off the 2011 Tony Awards ceremony. Harris was having fun with the long-standing relationship between Broadway and gays, who are a huge part of theater’s creative community and audience, and whose health issues have long been supported by the charity Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.

So it’s only natural that the Broadway crowd on Twitter would get creative with Wednesday’s ruling by the Supreme Court that opens the door for gay marriage in California and strikes down a key part of the Defense of Marriage Act.

On Twitter, theater pundit Howard Sherman and Washington Post theater critic Peter Marks often are the ringleaders of hashtag mash-ups playing off Broadway titles. Wednesday’s is #MarriageEqualityBroadway.
