Despite a federal budget crunch that has resulted in a sequester, the National Endowment for the Arts announced this week it has awarded $26.3 million in new grants to cultural organizations around the country. The list of recipients includes 122 groups in California and 218 in New York.

The NEA said Tuesday the latest round of grants range from $4,000 to $125,000, with an average grant amount of $32,122. The grants were announced by the NEA’s acting Chairman Joan Shigekawa.

The group said it received 1,547 eligible applications under the “Art Works†category, requesting more than $80 million in funding. A total of 817 grants were made, according to the NEA.
