‘True Blood’s’ Stephen Moyer to star in ‘Chicago’ at Hollywood Bowl

Stephen Moyer of HBO’s “True Blood†will trade in his fangs for some dancing shoes this summer when he takes the role of Billy Flynn in the musical “Chicago†at the Hollywood Bowl, set to run for only three performances from July 26 to 28.

Moyer plays the blood-sucking vampire Bill Compton in the popular HBO drama, which recently began its sixth season. Though famous in this country for his screen roles, Moyer worked with a number of British theater companies, including the Royal Shakespeare Company, before hitting it big on TV.

Taking the role of Velma Kelly in “Chicago†will be Samantha Barks, who was recently seen in the movie version of “Les Miserables†in the role of Eponine. Casting for the third lead role -- Roxie Hart -- will be announced at a later date.

Rounding out the supporting cast will be Drew Carey as Amos Hart, Roxie’s husband, and former “Xena: Warrior Princess†star Lucy Lawless as Mama Morton.

As previously announced, the production will be directed by Brooke Shields, who is one of many actresses to have cycled through the role of Roxie Hart in the long-running Broadway revival of “Chicago.â€

Last summer the Bowl presented “The Producers,†directed by Susan Stroman and starring Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Richard Kind.
