Carole King musical to debut in San Francisco prior to Broadway

“Beautiful: The Carole King Musical,†a new stage biography of the American singer-songwriter, will have an out-of-town tryout in San Francisco in September before making its scheduled Broadway debut in spring 2014.

The show will open at the SHN Curran Theatre in San Francisco, running from Sept. 24 through Oct. 20. Producers have not announced a theater or dates for next year’s planned Broadway engagement.

“Beautiful†will cover King’s career, including her beginnings in Brooklyn (her real name is Carol Klein) and her marriage to songwriter Gerry Goffin. The jukebox musical will feature songs by King and Goffin.

The duo wrote a number of hits for other singers during the 1960s. Some of their most popular songs include “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,†“The Loco-Motion†and “Will You Love Me Tomorrow.â€

Douglas McGrath, who co-wrote Woody Allen’s “Bullets Over Broadway,†is writing the book for the show. The musical will also include songs by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weill.

No cast has been announced for “Beautiful.†Marc Bruni has been hired to direct the San Francisco production.

Ticket sales are strong for another jukebox production, “Motown: the Musical,†which recently opened on Broadway. The show features songs from the Temptations, Diana Ross and the Supremes and other groups.
