Uber to deliver some Christmas trees on demand Thursday

For its latest marketing stunt, Uber is teaming up with Home Depot to deliver Christmas trees to customers on Thursday.

The on-demand ride service said customers in 10 select cities can click on a special Christmas tree icon in the Uber smartphone app.

“Instead of spending your weekend wrestling with a tree from the not-so-near farm or slushy street corner, kick back, pour yourself an extra glass of eggnog and watch your app as Uber takes care of the heavy lifting,†Uber said in a blog post.

Customers who select the tree option will have one delivered within minutes, according to Uber. Each delivery includes a tree, a stand and a Christmas gift from Uber.

But using UberTree, as it’s called, won’t come cheap. Users will be charged $135 through the app. And the company says supplies will be “very limited.â€

UberTree will be available Thursday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Diego, San Francisco and Washington, D.C.

Previously, Uber has held similar marketing campaigns to gain publicity. Over the summer, users were allowed to use the Uber app to request an ice cream truck on demand, and in late October, the service let users request to have kittens brought to them for a short petting session.
