Google puts down Microsoft for selling ‘Scroogled’ merchandise

Old rivals Google and Microsoft are at it again, this time squabbling over a few pieces of clothing and a coffee mug.

Google on Thursday issued a snide response to Microsoft, which this week began selling merchandise for its “Scroogled†marketing campaign that aims to switch users from services like Gmail and Chrome to Outlook.com and Internet Explorer.

Microsoft has been attacking the Internet search giant all year, telling users that Google exploits their online activity to score advertising revenue.

Following various commercials, ads and websites for Scroogled, Microsoft is now selling shirts, hats, hoodies and coffee mugs for the campaign. The most popular item so far seems to be a coffee mug that says “Keep calm while we steal your data,†a modified version of the “Keep calm and carry on†British poster that has become all the rage these days.

Not one to let things go, Google decided to respond to the new merchandise Thursday, saying “Microsoft’s latest venture comes as no surprise; competition in the wearables space really is heating up.â€

Google is essentially deriding the software maker, saying that while Google is beginning to sell its futuristic Google Glass wearable device, Microsoft’s “wearable†devices are nothing more than a few pieces of clothing.

It’s a sassy retort that’s not all that inaccurate.

In Microsoft’s defense, the company has been rumored to be working on a smartwatch and even some devices similar to Glass. But Microsoft has yet to begin selling them.

Let’s see if Microsoft decides to respond.
