BlackBerry thanks app developers with 12,000 red Z10 smartphones

BlackBerry is thanking developers of apps for the BlackBerry 10, its new mobile platform, by presenting them with special limited-edition models of the company’s new Z10 smartphone.

The Canadian tech company announced the thank you gesture Tuesday morning, telling developers it appreciated their “taking a leap of faith†and sticking with BlackBerry.

“Thank you for all of the outstanding applications you have developed for BlackBerry 10,†the company said in a post on its developer blog. “Thank you for all of the long hours, late nights and early mornings you’ve spent coding.â€

In all, BlackBerry said it will give away 12,000 of the red phones. Developers can go to BlackBerry’s website for more information on how to get the limited edition red phones.

The Z10, an all touch-screen phone, is set to go on sale in the U.S. in March from T-Mobile, AT&T; and Verizon Wireless, but no carrier has given a formal release date.

The phone will be available to consumers in black, but Verizon will also offer an exclusive white version of the device.
