Nokia’s Lumia 920 may have better display than the iPhone 4S

Nokia didn’t say it, but the Lumia 920’s screen is more Retina than the iPhone 4S.

The Finnish company unveiled the new Windows Phone 8 device and touted its 4.5-inch LCD screen as the best touchscreen to ever grace a phone, calling it the “PureMotion HD+ display.â€

But what Nokia didn’t mention is that the display’s pixel-per-inch count comes in ahead of the iPhone 4S’ Retina, Apple’s own high pixel-per-inch display technology. Nokia lists the Lumia 920’s PPI at 332 while Apple, on the other hand, says the iPhone 4S’ PPI is 326.

Perhaps Nokia didn’t want to mention the word “Retina†to avoid any litigation from Apple the way Samsung recently did, but this means Nokia’s new flagship phone has a better display than Apple’s top phone.

The Lumia 920’s screen is also an inch bigger than the iPhone 4S, which measures 3.5 inches diagonally. And besides that, the Lumia 920’s screen resolution is also superior at 1,280 pixels by 768, compared to the iPhone 4S’ 960-by-640 resolution.

But Nokia’s new phone may not have the best display for long.

Motorola and HTC are expected to announce new phones later this month that could have better displays. And if they don’t, Apple might.

The Cupertino, Calif., tech giant will hold its event on Sept. 12, and it’s expected to unveil a 4-inch display iPhone that may best the Lumia 920 when it comes to PPI.
