In a consensus among the punditocracy, Mitt Romney won the first presidential debate Wednesday night — outpointing President Obama. But what does that victory really mean?

Debating the debate today at 11 a.m. PDT in a Google Hangout here at Politics Now will be Los Angeles Times business columnist Michael Hiltzik and conservative columnist Charlotte Allen.

The video discussion will cover all the high- and low-lights of the 90-minute debate between Romney and Obama. Will Romney’s win have legs, or was it a victory of style over substance? What are the fact-checkers saying about the veracity of the two candidates’ claims?

Hiltzik is the Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist who frequently has found fault with “trickle-down†economics and nostrums for federal social programs like Medicare and Medicaid. His column appears twice weekly in The Times.

Allen is a contributing editor for the Manhattan Institute’s “Minding the Campus†website, according to her biography at TownHall.com. She writes for the Weekly Standard and contributes to The Times and to other publications, including the Wall Street Journal.

As host of Politics Now, I’ll be moderating today’s Debate About the Debate. Join us at 11 a.m.
