First LULAC Chapter to Mark 50th Year
Orange County’s first chapter of the League of Latin American Citizens, the oldest in the state, will celebrate its 50th anniversary tonight.
The civil rights organization’s Santa Ana chapter will be honored at a special celebration at Plummer Auditorium in Fullerton.
LULAC officers from throughout Orange County will tell the story of the group’s beginnings with a slide show and conclude with a concert by Bronze. Congratulatory proclamations from the White House and the county Board of Supervisors will be presented.
Gilberto Flores, LULAC’s Orange County district director, said the public is welcome to attend the event, at which he will call for the creation of more LULAC chapters throughout the county. He said his goal is to double the number of chapters within a year.
Besides LULAC of Santa Ana, there are chapters in Irvine, Anaheim, Buena Park, Placentia and Stanton, and there is the Sequoia branch, made up mostly of county postmasters and mail carriers.
The celebration will begin at 6 p.m. at the auditorium, 201 E. Chapman Ave., in Fullerton. Admission is $15 to $30 per person. Information: (714) 773-0992.
